Ukrainian Academic Gymnasium was founded in 1784. This event was proceded by long years of contention and work which was organized by Ukrainian community and many Ukrainian patriots-teachers and social workers especially Bishop Yakymovych and ambassador father Grihoriy Shashkevych.

Founded more than 200 years ago by Austro-Aungarian state of that time education needs of Ukrainian people of Galicia, famous gymnasiu was really the first in Ukraine innovated secondary school of classical type with native language which was established since 1874.

There is a great desert in it of the first director - Ukrainian father Vasyl Ilnytskyi deserved patriot who took care of religious education and national direction gymnasiu’s work.

At gymnasium on teachers positions worked respected teachers and public men such as - Ivan Boberskyi, Alexander Tysovskyi, Stephan Shakh, Bogdan Makarushka, Yosyp Zastrots, P.Prokopovych-Orlenko, Yu.Opilkyi,Ya.Rudnutskyi and others.

Remaining the status of a state educational institution under every colonial adminisration the first-born of the oppressed people national schooling managed to cherist for the Motherland and the whole world a lot of honest, wise and courageous citizens who laid their knowledge and gifts as well as their lives in the foundation of the long-termdreamt liberty.

Among its graduates we can name the pioneer of national cultural renascence Mykola Ustyianovych and professor Omelian Ohonovsky, academician Mykhailo Voznyak and compozer Stanislav Lyudkevych, colonel Yevhen Konovalets and general Roman Shukhevych- Chuprynka.

Academic Gymnasium has returned to new life with the rerial of our country in 1992.

The main aim of the Gymnasium is to educate scientific and conscious elite of the Ukrainian nation.

The pupils are admitted to the Gymnasium on the basis of competitive examinations.

From grade one to four the pupils are given extended knowledge in Ukrainian, Mathematic and English.

Gymnasium students are given an opprtunity to learn the second language of their own choice(German or French) from the first to the sixth grade they study Latin.

636 students have been studying at the establishment preparing this year to celebrate its first anniversary.

The staff includes 78 teachers,among them 5 Candidates of Science,1 Honoured Teacher of Ukraine,4 methodologist and 5 are awarded the title of Senior Teacher, 1 Soros Teacher,35 High Category teachers with exellent results in public educa - tion.

Already the fifth year nem gymnasium replenishment will take an oath of student of gymnasium at grand academy which traditionally take place on the sixth of May on st.Yura’s Day who is the patron of gymnasium.

On st.Yura’s Day the gymnasium has a grand academy - a holiday on which the totals are summed up and the best students the winners of local,all Ukrainian and world competition are awrded.There are many such students at the gymnasium.

The first maturity test had passed at academic gymnasium in 1878.

In 120 years of reriral Lviv Academic Gymnasium will have its first graduates.
