     The Ukrainian Academic Gymnasium was founded in 1784. This event was proceeded by long years of competitive work of the Ukrainian community as well as many other teachers patriots and public figures, such as Metropolitan Yakumovych and Ambassador and priest Hryhoriy Shashkevych.

Founded by Ausro-Hungurian state more then 200 years ago for the educational needs of Halician Ukrainians, the glorious gymnasium was ranked the first of Ukraine contemporary secondary school of classical type with the native language of teaching, introduced in 1874.

The first Ukrainian headmaster, Reverend Vasyl Ilnytskyi, the honourable patriot who took much interest and care in religious education and national upbringing in the gymnasium deserved the most.

Such honourable teachers and public figures as Ivan Boberskyi, Olexander Tysovskyi, Stepan Shach, Bogdan Makarushka, Yosyp Zastrots, R. Prokopovych-Orlenko, Yulian Opelskyi, Ya. Rudnytskyi and others worked in the gymnasium.

The first national school of enslaved peoples, preserving the status of state education, cherished a great number of honest, intelegent and courageous citizens for our motherland and the world, who contributed their knowledge, talent and life in the name of dreamed freadom.

Among its pupils were Mykola Ustiyanovych, the pioneer of national and cultural revival, professor Omelian Ohonovskyi, composer Stanislav Ludkevych, colonel Yevhen Konovalets and general Roman Shuchevych - Chuprynka.

The Academic Gymnasium resumed its activities with the revival of our state in 1992. The Lviv Academic Gymnasium invites gifted and talented children for studying. The principle aim of the gymnasium is to educate and bring up scientific and self-conscious elite of the Ukrainian nation. The pupils are admilted to the Gymnasium on the basis of competetive tests.

In grades 1-4 pupils obtain intensive knoledge in the Ukrainian language, mathematics and English. The pupils are given a choice to study the second foreign languages.

Introducing and practising new methods of teaching, the gymnasium creates intellectual personalities.

The number of pupils in the gymnasium is 636. There are 78 teachers, among them 5 Philosophy Doctors, 1 honoured Teacher of Ukraine, 4 Teachers-Methodologists, 5 Senior Teachers, 1 Soros Teacher, 35 High Category Teachers.

For the fifth year a new gymnasium replenishment takes an oath during the traditional ceremony which takes place on May 6 on St.Yuriy's Day, who is the patron of the gymnasium.

On St. Yuriy's Day the gymnasium has a grand academy when the results summed up and the best pupils, the winners of local,all Ukrainian and world contests are awarded. There are many students the gymnasium is proud of.

The first maturity exemination took place in 1878. 1998 - is the year of the first gymnasium graduates.
